Project Overview
RecBee is a mobile app built to help beekeepers manage their hives while working in real field conditions. Most existing tools are full of menus, small buttons, and unnecessary complexity. This makes them difficult to use outdoors, especially while wearing gloves or working under bright sunlight. The goal of this project was to design a fast and practical tool that simplifies hive management and reduces logging time.

Problem
To understand the problem, we ran a survey with 178 beekeepers and conducted a competitor analysis of apps such as BeeKeepPal and HiveTracks. The research showed that the biggest frustrations were slow data entry, cluttered interfaces, and too many steps to log inspections. Many users stopped tracking hive data entirely because the tools were too complicated to use while working around the hives.
Solution
The design solution focused on logic, speed, and simplified structure. The information architecture was optimized using a 2-Tap Rule, meaning every important action or piece of information is accessible within two taps. User flows were simplified to remove unnecessary steps, and onboarding moves users directly from account creation to setting up their first hives. The interface also uses high-contrast visuals for outdoor readability, large touch targets for quick input, and an integrated queen bee marking chart to simplify colony tracking.
Result
The final product became a fast, field-ready hive management tool with features such as bulk hive creation, QR hive identification, and offline-first data syncing. User testing showed strong results: average hive inspection logging time dropped from about 3 minutes to roughly 90 seconds, and 95% of users completed bulk hive setup without guidance. The project confirmed that when you design for the hardest environment, simplicity becomes a major usability advantage.
